Melvin Guillard was fired from the UFC last week, ending an almost nine-year cycle within the North American organization. However, anyone who thinks that the fighter was devastated by the news is mistaken. In his opinion, his departure from the UFC was the best thing that could have happened to him.

Guillard was sent away after a lackluster defeat to Michael Johnson, at UFC Fight Night London, on March 8th. The American, however, stated, in an interview with the “MMA Fighting” website, that he was not in his best physical condition. “I didn’t expect to be let go. I expected Joe [Silva, responsible for matching fights in the UFC] to do what he always does and leave me aside for about six months, until I asked him for a fight. But I ended up being let go, and for me, I think that was the best thing that could have happened to me,” he said.

"I was happy. I gave the UFC nine years, nine good years. And I had a bad performance in London, where I had two injured ribs, I hurt my hand in the first round, but I didn't make excuses. I stayed there and fought. I could have done like most fighters and given up, but I fought injured”, explained Guillard, who sees the possibility of improving his financial condition in what happened.

“Now, I can get on with my life. I can sign with another organization that will probably pay me more than what I was making in the UFC. Now, I have the chance to make decent money, after all, I know my worth”, he said.

In his career in Ultimate, Melvin had a record of 12 wins and nine losses. The numbers get worse if only his last eight fights are taken into account, in which he suffered five defeats, won only two fights and had one unsuccessful fight.
