Cannonier is excited about Poatan as the new champion: 'More chances for everyone'

Fighter believes that the champion needs to face the top of the category to establish himself in his position

With a new king in the middleweight category (up to 83,9kg.), Jared Cannonier believes that the path to the belt could be easier. According to the North American, only Sean Strickland and Adesanya would need to ask for a rematch against Poatan, an option that is not usually easily accepted in the organization. With the division busy, Jared welcomes the arrival of the new champion.

“I wouldn’t say I was shocked. Fights are like that. You can be winning one minute and the next moment you're trying to dodge hard blows. That's how it is. It was sad how it happened for Adesanya, and that's the game. I wouldn't say it was good for me, that I was happy or anything like that. I didn't have an emotional reaction to it, it was something more logical. And from what I think, this brings more interest to the division, instead of bringing more interest to Israel itself. So it's good for the rest of us. All of us now have more chances to fight for the title, instead of trying to get back together for a rematch, which I think is more difficult,” Cannonier said to 'MMA Mania'.

Third placed in the middleweight rankings, 'Killa Gorilla', as he is known, comes from a victory over Sean Strickland at 'UFC Vegas 66', on the 17th. During a press conference held after the event, the athlete expressed interest in a title fight in early 2023 or a fight, which, in case of victory, would entitle him to the belt.

Even though it hasn't been officially announced, Ultimate already seems to be working towards a rematch between Alex Poatán e Israel adesanya.
