Jon Jones, current UFC light heavyweight champion, doesn't see himself having a super fight against Chris Weidman, owner of the middleweight belt, in the near future.
Weidman, who won the title in 2013, surpassing Anderson Silva, has already expressed his desire to move up a category in the coming years. However, this would only happen after he had overcome all his possible challenges in his division.
In an interview with the North American television channel AXS TV, Jones also thinks that Weidman still needs to test himself against more prominent names within the UFC. “A lot of people started mentioning the name of Chris Weidman. I think that, to be a superfight, Weidman needs to make his name grow and test himself against some other world champions”, said Jones.
Therefore, the only superfight that Jones considers makes sense for his career would be against the heavyweight champion. "I think that Cain Velazquez He’s the only guy where it would really be a super fight”, he said.
Despite considering having super fights, Jones still has commitments within his UFC category. He will face Glover Teixeira at UFC 172, on April 26, putting his title on the line. Weidman also has a date set to return to the octagon: May 24th, against Vitor belfort. Velasquez, in turn, is recovering from surgery and has no plans to put his belt up for grabs.
