As soon as he entered the UFC 169 press room, after defeating Ricardo Lamas and defending the featherweight belt, José Aldo was asked about his future and a possible move to the lightweight division. Unlike usual, when he always left the decision in the hands of his coach, Dedé Pederneiras, the Brazilian quickly prepared to face Anthony Pettis, owner of the top division title.
“I'm ready and everyone wants my fight against Anthony. You can ask everyone here (in the press room). This fight is what everyone wants and so do I. I think it will be a great fight, that will entertain everyone, and I'm ready. I’m just waiting for Dana”, said Aldo
As soon as Aldo mentioned Pettis, the lightweight champion sent a text message to Dana White accepting the challenge. The leader quickly accepted the clash. “There it is, they want this fight. It was easy. Done deal. One less thing to do on Monday”, said the manager.
Despite the optimism for the clash, Dana made an important demand for Aldo. To fight for the belt against Pettis, he would have to give up the featherweight title.
“If Aldo decides to fight at lightweight, he will have to leave his belt vacant. And, if he later wants to return to the featherweight division, he can come back and try to fight for the belt again. If he is the lightweight champion, he can continue in that category with his belt”, concluded the president.
