Experienced Russian fighter Alexey Oleinik stated, in an interview with his country's website Blood & Sweat, that he signed a contract with the UFC and will join the heavyweight roster of the largest MMA organization in the world.
Oleinik, 36 years old, has been working as a professional fighter since 1997. He is currently on a good streak of nine consecutive wins, including triumphs over names like Jeff Monson, Dion Staring and, more recently, Mirko Cro Cop, whom he submitted at an event held in early November, in Moscow.
The athlete celebrated the success and said he had been waiting for this moment for a long time. “We were negotiating with the UFC, but every time we got the same answer: 'We're watching you, and when the time is right, we'll get in touch,'” he described. “On the one hand, it made me tired, but on the other, I'm happy that everything ended well.”
Oleinik stated that he will be able to debut in the UFC at the beginning of 2014. “February or March would be good for the debut. Now, I am training relaxed and in January the training will be at full strength”, explained the fighter, who enters the North American organization with moderate goals.
“I’m not thinking about the title at the moment,” he commented. “The main thing for me initially is to make a worthy and beautiful debut in the UFC. Maybe later, when I feel more confident in the new organization, I can talk about titles.”
In his record, Oleinik has 48 wins (of which 38 are by submission) and nine defeats, the last of which was in March 2012.
