MMA icon warns Kamaru Usman not to test himself in UFC light heavyweight: 'It's crazy'

Refereeing legend, John McCarthy says he admires Ultimate champion, but doesn't see the Nigerian's intention as correct

Days after surprising and confirming his desire to test himself in the light heavyweight division (up to 93kg) of Ultimate, Kamaru Usman received some advice from an MMA icon. Refereeing legend, John McCarthy was against the intention of the welterweight champion (up to 77kg) and advised the Nigerian legend. In your podcast, 'Weighing In', the professional explained his position.

“I didn’t want to see that (Usman in light heavyweight). I like Kamaru Usman, I think he's a phenomenal fighter. Welterweight is a great weight class for him. Light heavyweight athletes are very big,” said John.

“This guy (Usman) has a lot of physical conditioning, great wrestling and his striking has been very good. He's a great MMA fighter, and at welterweight, he's the king. He continues as king, don't go so far. We are talking about 15,8kg. about your weight. It's insane. Don’t do that,” he signed off.
