Former UFC featherweight title challenger, knocked out by José Aldo with a spectacular knee, Chad Mendes wants to face the UFC Rio 2 tormentor again in the future. However, the North American, currently ranked number one in the 66 kg division, has already outlined his plan if he is unsuccessful in his new attempt: moving down to bantamweight.
“Dropping down a category is something I’ve really considered, and I definitely could. I'm not one of the biggest featherweights. I think I'm probably an intermediate featherweight, but I could definitely hit 61 pounds if I had to. But I would like to make another attempt, I hope to win the featherweight belt, defend it a few times and then, according to what my body allows, if it allows me, I would like to go to bantamweight,” stated Mendes during a Q&A session last weekend.
Chad Mendes, aged 28, has a record of 15 wins and just one defeat, precisely to José Aldo. The American has won four consecutive victories since the knockout suffered in the featherweight title fight. Since then, Mendes has beaten Cody McKenzie, Yaotzin Meza, Darren Elkins and Clay guida. In December, “Money”, as he is known, faces Nik lentz at UFC on FOX 9.
