Cain Velazquez took no notice of junior gypsy, dominated the Brazilian for 23 minutes and won the main fight of UFC 166 by knockout in the fifth round. But after the triumph, the heavyweight champion is already thinking about his next engagement in the Octagon: the Gaucho Fabricio Werdum.
Shortly after defending the heavyweight title for the second time, Velasquez was asked about his commitment to the Brazilian athlete. Still in a measured tone, the American of Mexican descent praised the qualities of the next challenger. “He IS a very good fighter. He has great jiu-jitsu and fights well on the feet. I have a lot of respect for him”, said the champion.
In turn, the Brazilian used his Twitter account to analyze the champion's game. For Werdum, Velasquez's style of play fits his profile inside the octagon. “Very good fight! Now I'm going to focus a lot on becoming the new champion! Cain’s game is perfect for me”, wrote Fabrício on the microblog.
Although the duel has not yet been made official by the UFC, Werdum should be Velasquez's next opponent in the octagon. The franchise's president, Dana White, revealed after UFC 166 that the duel makes 'complete sense' at this point.
