Despite the victory, by technical knockout, over Mark Coleman at UFC-93, Maurício's performance was heavily criticized in the American press, due to the decline in his physical conditioning during the fight. The Brazilian justified his performance at the press conference after the event.
“I was out of action for a year and a half, I had two surgeries. This is not easy and it has affected my conditioning a lot. It's one thing to train, it's another to fight. When you return to combat you have to gradually regain your rhythm. I paid a price for that, but I'm sure that by my next fight, I will be more prepared and in better shape, with better conditioning, to give a great show to my fans”, said the Brazilian who faces Chuck Liddell in the UFC- 97, scheduled for April 18, in Montreal.
