Next welterweight challenger, Leon Edwards projects first title defense against Jorge Masvidal

Even before facing the feared Kamaru Usman, the English athlete already envisions his first fight as UFC champion

Next challenger in the welterweight division (up to 77,1kg), Leon Edwards showed confidence for the clash against Kamaru Usman and is already planning his first title defense. In a statement to 'MMA Fighting', the English fighter provoked Jorge masvidal and made clear his desire to face him soon.

“When I win the belt, I will give it to him (Jorge masvidal) the title shot. That would be a fantastic fight in the UK. Bring it back to the O2 Arena for the title. That's what I want to do after this. …I'll offer it to him. My dream scenario would be to bring it back to London and headline,” said Edwards.

Even though he was planning a confrontation with Masvidal, Edwards made a point of emphasizing that Usman will probably have a rematch if he is defeated in the UFC 278.

“I believe this will happen (the rematch against Usman), but I would love to do this fight. I think it would be a great fight and a great backstory, but I think it will happen. I'm going to beat Usman in August and they're going to want a rematch at the end of the year, in December. But let’s see what will happen”, concluded the Englishman.

Number two in the category ranking, Edwards has been riding on nine consecutive wins in the organization. His last defeat was against Kamaru Usman, in December 2015. At 30 years old, the English athlete has a record of 19 triumphs, three setbacks and one no-contest (fight without result).
