With the reverse of Anderson Silva, in July, the Canadian Georges St Pierre became the UFC's most dominant champion. GSP has been champion of the welterweight division since 2008 and has eight consecutive title defenses, even so he cannot escape being criticized by big names in the sport. For former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, the Canadian's conservative style doesn't please him.
“Some people complain about some champions who fight 'safely'. I understand, but I don't watch it. I think St-Pierre is a great fighter, but I don't like seeing him play it 'safe' all the time. In the fight against Nick Diaz he circled the octagon for half the fight. I don’t like watching that,” Liddell told the ESPN website in the United States.
Despite the criticism, Liddell, who is part of the UFC's Hall of Fame and is currently an executive at the organization, said he praises St. Pierre's supremacy in the 77 kg division.
“What he does with these high-level fighters is incredible, but not exciting. They fight thinking 'I've already beaten this guy for four rounds, I'm going to win the fifth round too. I'm not going to try to finish him, I'm not going to go up, I'm not going to take any risks'. From a technical and business point of view, it makes sense. It's a lot of money. But from the fans' point of view, I don't watch it. Unless he's going to face someone who I think can make him fight. I'm excited for his next fight, I think the John hendricks will make him fight”, added the 'Iceman'.
The next appointment Georges St Pierre in the Octagon will be at UFC 167, an event that marks the celebrations of Ultimate's 20th anniversary. In the main fight of the night, on November 16th, she defends her welterweight reign against John hendricks.
