New defeat of Cain Velazquez in justice. In a hearing held this Monday (16), the former heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg) had his request for bail denied, for the second time, by the Santa Clara County Court, in the United States. He is accused of attempted murder and has been in prison since February this year.

Velasquez's defense filed a request for bail in an agreement that would involve an amount of US$1 million (around R$5 million, at the current exchange rate), in addition to electronic monitoring and relocation to an inpatient unit outside the state, as well as 24 hour supervision. The appeal, however, was denied by judge Shelyna Brown, after arguments from both sides in a hearing that lasted around 30 minutes.

The courtroom was packed with Cain supporters, including the former heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and coach of 'AKA', Javier Mendez.

Velasquez is arrested, allegedly, for reasons of 'taking the law into his own hands' and is said to have been involved in a car chase, fired shots with a firearm and hit the father of Harry Eugene Goularte, who is accused of molesting an underage member of the fighter's family. One of the shots, however, ended up hitting Paulo Bender, Goularte's stepfather, in the shoulder.

'No respect'

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office further argued that there were no reasonable terms that would eliminate the risk to Goulart and his family. Paulo Bender, who was shot, stated that Cain Velazquez he has no 'respect for human life' and, therefore, must remain a prisoner.

"Cain Velazquez has no respect for human life. He could have easily shot the family in the car next to us, innocent pedestrians, or even small children. Cain Velazquez he doesn't care who sees him do it. He doesn't care about the rule of law and has no respect for our judicial system. If given the opportunity, I believe he will try to finish what he started. I fear for my life, as well as for the lives of my family. No amount of bail or GPS monitor will stop Cain Velazquez. Respectfully, Your Honor, I ask that you help keep my family safe and our community safe from Cain Velazquez and deny his request for bail,” Bender said.

Cain is due back in court for a court hearing scheduled for June 10, to determine whether the case will go to trial or whether a settlement will be reached between both parties.
