After abolishing the light heavyweight and middleweight categories, the WEC organization announced the creation of the flyweight category in 2009.
The show already has the welterweight, lightweight, featherweight and featherweight divisions and intends to debut the new division possibly at WEC-39, scheduled for San Diego in March.
Possible names for the category are Yuki Shoujou, BJ Kojima and Mamoru “Afro Samurai” Yamaguchi. There are also rumors of including a women's division, with Dana White interested in signing star Gina Carano, but so far there is no official statement about the event.
