Without the belt, but with a 'washed soul' after winning Justin gaethje brilliantly in UFC 274, Charles of the Bronx vented about the nightmare he experienced in the hours leading up to this Saturday's show (7). Dethroned in the lightweight category (up to 70,3kg) after failing to make the weight cut for the event, the Brazilian revealed what made him maintain his concentration to fulfill his commitment and have a great performance. In the fight, the São Paulo native submitted his rival in the first round.

“It was crazy, but this is the time when you separate the man from the children. You have to be focused. The team put me in this focus. It won't make a difference. They (the opponents) say that I give up the fight, and I prove that I don't. Now they fix the scale problem for me. Let’s see what the next problem will be,” he said.

Last Friday (6), Do Bronx found himself involved in an unprecedented controversy for a UFC champion. With accusations that the scale used at the hotel had a calibration error, the athlete failed to cut his weight by around 200g.

“I never thought about cutting my hair (to reach the weight limit). I woke up (on Friday) knowing I was in weight. Every time, I hit my weight on Thursday. (…) The balance wasn’t working. Life goes on. It’s gone,” he concluded.

According to the rule, Charles ended up losing the title. The triumph over Gaethje, then, does not allow the Brazilian to win the title.

Despite the problems, Do Bronx's victory over Gaethje guaranteed the São Paulo native the opportunity to fight for the now vacant lightweight belt. The athlete, however, does not know when or who will be the rival with whom he will share the octagon in the clash valid for the title.
