UFC confirms that Charles do Bronx will have a chance to fight for the belt again if he beats Gaethje

In a statement, the company announced that the Brazilian was stripped of his position as lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg) and lost part of his fight purse on Saturday (7).

Ultimate released a statement about the future of Charles of the Bronx after failing to cut weight to defend his belt against Justin gaethje No. UFC 274 this Saturday (7). On its official website, the organization confirmed that the Brazilian lost the lightweight title (up to 70,3kg), but will have a new chance to regain the title of champion, if he defeats the North American in the main fight of the night.

“Charles Oliveira didn’t make weight for his fight with Justin gaethje No. UFC 274 on Friday afternoon in Phoenix, officially weighing 70,5 pounds. As a result, Charles will lose a percentage of his scholarship. At this moment, Charles Oliveira remains UFC lightweight champion, but at the start of tomorrow's main fight he will vacate the lightweight title. The fight will be held normally, but only Justin gaethje will be eligible to win the belt. If Charles wins, he will be the number one contender for the vacant lightweight title and will face the next challenger at a date and location to be determined,” the UFC announced.

From the Bronx he lost his place as champion after weighing 70,5kg. at the official weigh-in for the event. The Brazilian still had an extra hour, but was unable to cut 220g for the title fight. Justin gaethje, in turn, was in weight and will wear the belt, in case of victory in the fight.
