The UFC really seems to be willing to invest in the Brazilian market. In addition to holding events in several Brazilian capitals, cities in the interior become targets to host the biggest MMA event in the world. In 2013 Jaraguá do Sul, in May, and Barueri, in an event scheduled for October, were the first cities in the interior to host the show. Now, it seems that it will be Uberlândia’s turn in 2014.
UFC international development director, Marshall Zelaznik, announced that the city of Triângulo Mineiro is one of the candidates to host the event in the country in 2014. “It is one of the locations we are studying and we believe we will be able to hold the event in Uberlândia. We are looking very carefully,” he said. The report contacted the city's Sports Department, which confirmed the survey, but denied any agreement with the UFC.
The city in the interior of Minas Gerais, which has a population of 620 thousand inhabitants, has one of the main economies in the state. The UFC's goal is to hold events indoors in smaller arenas. “Our idea is to have a more intimate event, like we did in Belo Horizonte and Indianapolis. We look for intimate arenas for Wednesday nights and large arenas for events on Saturdays. Uberlândia is on our list”, he added.
