Personal friend of Colby covington, Chael Sonnen is aware of the high risk that the colleague is placed after being publicly challenged by Khamzat Shimaev. In an attempt to find resources that favor the former interim welterweight champion (up to 77kg), the veteran stated that the athlete needs to make demands to accept the fight. “The fight could only happen if it was a direct opportunity to challenge the champion (in the sequel). (…) What are you going to give him? You will put him in a main fight in which he will perform for 25 minutes with Chimaev. The way they perform, 25 minutes can change your life,” said Sonnen.
With a real awareness of the dangers faced when submitting to a fight against Khamzat, Chael continued. The veteran is looking for justifications to understand the meaning of promoting a confrontation that will not lead the winner to a title fight.
“Why fight? There is a point in your career when you just compete and nothing else. However, when you start winning main fights, and continue to triumph, as Colby has done, you win the interim belt and they take it away from you. You surpass the owner of the 'BMF title, but they won't give you recognition. At some point, Colby will need to put his foot down,” he signed off.
Last weekend, Chimaev faced his biggest challenge as a professional in MMA. With a points victory against Gilbert Durinho, UFC 273, the Swede took third place in the ranking. The week of the event, the company's president, Dana White, assured that he would not rule out promoting a fight between Covington and Khamzat.
