Rated to face Paulo borrachinha, Sean Strickland was confirmed as the next opponent of Alex Poatán No. UFC 277, scheduled for July 30th. As a result, it was up to the Brazilian, a former middleweight title challenger (83,9 kg), to find a new target for his next fight. According to the athlete's brother, Derek Brunson is the name of the moment.

Brother and main trainer of the former UFC belt challenger, Carlos Borracha revealed, in an interview with journalist Leonardo Fabri, from “PVT”, that Borrachinha's new focus is Derek Brunson, which shares the fourth position in the ranking with the Brazilian and with Sean Strickland.
“Strickland challenged Borrachinha a long time ago, but when he accepted, Strickland ran away from us and they ended up giving Poatan to him. Strickland did it, but we have other ranked fighters in our sights, like Derek Brunson. We hope Brunson keeps his word and doesn't run like Strickland did. In fact, Brunson has already challenged Borrachinha and now is the best time for this fight to take place”, declared Borracha.
In the UFC since 2017, Paulo borrachinha had an impressive trajectory until reaching the middleweight title fight, when he was knocked out by Israel adesanya and, as a bonus, he lost his unbeaten record in his career. Currently the Brazilian comes from a setback to Marvin vettori, in October of last year.
Just like Borrachinha, Derek Brunson also comes from a defeat in the octagon. The 38-year-old American was knocked out by Jared Cannonier in February, ending a winning streak that lasted five fights.
