It wasn't long ago that Dana White clashed on Twitter with Ben Askren, champion of the welterweight division of Bellator, the organization that is currently the UFC's main rival. Criticizing Askren's fighting style, the UFC president said that the fighter was “the most boring in the world” and that it was “better to watch two f*cking ants than Askren fighting”.
It remains to be seen whether White has changed his mind about Askren's style, but discussions have come to a lull. The manager confirmed this Thursday that he will try to sign the Bellator champion.
“We're going to talk to Ben,” White said during a meeting with journalists before the pre-UFC Fight Night 26 press conference, when asked if Askren was interested in the UFC. “Yes, we will talk to him.”
Ben Askren had the last fight of his contract on July 31, when he annihilated the challenger Andrei Koreshkov. This was Askren's second consecutive victory by technical knockout in Bellator, after six victories by decision in a row, which led to criticism that the fighter was not exciting. An elite wrestler, Askren was part of the North American Olympic team at the Beijing Games in 2008. He is undefeated in MMA with eleven wins in the same number of fights.
