When you think there is no more to be said for Chael Sonnen, the loudmouth surprises again. This Thursday (15), during open training sessions at UFC Fight Night 26, in Boston (USA), Sonnen revealed that he wants to become an MMA judge and work on the rematch between Anderson Silva e Chris Weidman, at the end of the year.
“I'm sending an application (to the Nevada State Athletic Commission), I'm going to try to get a referee's license and I'm hoping to referee this fight (Spider vs Weidman 2). Whether they cast me or not, I've refereed a lot of fights in other jurisdictions and I'm trying to get it in Nevada,” the American told the “MMA Fighting” website.
Even admitting the desire, Sonnen later stated that it was a difficult dream to achieve. “Getting the main event, I don’t think so. It's going to be difficult unless I can work an event or two in Nevada before then, and I don't know what the schedule is like there. But for refereeing, I think (I can get the license) yes. I'm not going to campaign. There are great referees out there, but I want to referee. I'm sure all the other referees want it too, but I'm putting my name on the list”, he concluded.
UFC president Dana White commented, in a humorous way, on Sonnen's statement. “If he thinks that Keith Kizer (executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission) is going to license him as a referee, he is more deluded than I thought,” said the director, also on “MMA Fighting”.
Not yet as a judge, Chael Sonnen enters the octagon this Saturday (17), wearing gloves and using a mouth guard, to face the Brazilian Mauritius Shogun. The clash is the main fight of UFC Fight Night 26, which takes place at TD Garden, in Boston (USA).
