Without losing since he faced the current champion in 2015, the Brit should be the next challenger for the welterweight belt

Likely next challenger for the welterweight belt (up to 77 kg), Leon edwards hasn't lost a fight since being defeated current champion Kamaru Usman in December 2015. Almost seven years later, the Brit believes that there is no possibility of the result of the first duel being repeated.

In an interview with the British newspaper “The Mirror”, when responding about the possible fight between Kamaru Usman and the multiple world boxing champion Canelo Alvarez placeholder image, Leon edwards he stated that the Nigerian has no chance either against the Mexican or in a possible rematch against him.

"I do not know where he is. There's no way he can beat Canelo and there's no way he can beat me either. I read something that came out the other day where he said he's coming to wrestle throughout the fight. He can do whatever he wants. I’m ready,” Edwards responded.

Still on the possible fight between Usman and Canelo, Leon edwards stated that he understands the Nigerian's desire due to the financial opportunity and assured that he will pave the way for the duel to take place by “taking the belt” from the current champion in the likely rematch.

PUBLICITY:

“Either he wants the money, or he’s trying to test himself, one or the other. It's not a long career, so if you can make some money, do it. I will be the champion when he leaves, so I will take the belt from him and he can go and do what he wants to do”, said “Rocky”.

Edwards and Usman faced each other in December 2015, with the Nigerian, who was fighting in his second UFC fight, winning by unanimous decision from the judges. With six years having passed and both fighters undefeated since then, the Brit believes that the first clash cannot serve as a parameter to analyze the rematch.

PUBLICITY:

“He has evolved a lot, but so have I. When I fought him, I was 22 years old, now I'm 30. I learned a lot in that time, but he also learned. It’s going to be a totally different fight than it was back then, so we have to look at it as a new fight.”
