After another victory in the UFC, against his compatriot Bruno Blindado, Alex Poatán surprised in the post-event interview by asking to face Jared Cannonier. The North American, however, should be the next challenger for the middleweight belt (up to 83,9kg), led by Israel adesanya and, therefore, it is unlikely that the fight will get off the ground.

When talking about the subject on the program 'DC & RC’, Daniel Cormier mocked the Brazilian's challenge. For him, Poatan still needs to prove himself against other ranked athletes before trying to jump steps towards a possible title shot against his former rival from his kickboxing days.
“He challenges the Jared Cannonier, who will fight for the title. Like: what are you doing? I mean, fight someone in the top 15 or top 10. I know, you can dream big. But the dream is someone ranked. Credibility comes from victories against Izzy (Adesanya) in kickboxing. (…) He is trying to find the shortest way to get to where he believes he belongs. But, he’s serious, we have to be realistic about how we make our way through the UFC rankings,” Cormier said.

Poatan made his move to MMA after great success at GLORY – which is recognized as the biggest kickboxing event in the world. He had two fights in Ultimate, with two victories over Andreas Michailidis e Bruno Blindado.
