After achieving a good victory over Derek Brunson No. UFC 271 last Saturday (12), Jared Cannonier was confirmed by UFC president Dana White as the next challenger for the middleweight belt (up to 83,9kg). Now, the North American started planning a 'standing confrontation' with Israel adesanya.

“It will be fun to fight another striker. I will really show my skills in this fight. All these other guys just tried to take me down because they can't trade with me standing up. It will be a good opportunity to show my true skills as a striker. People only see me as a big, powerful guy who can hit you with a punch and hurt you. Knowing the 'caliber' of fighter that Izzy (Adesanya) is, I feel that he will also bring his best version”, said Cannonier in an interview with the podcast 'The MMA Hour'.

Despite having confirmation from UFC president Dana White, Jared admits that he feels 'afraid' of being overtaken by Sean Strickland – who defeated Jack hermansson in the beginning of the month. Still, he believes he has done enough to warrant a chance to challenge Adesanya.

“To be honest, it’s the fight that needs to happen. Anyone who mentions Sean Strickland will ignore the ranking. I beat Kevin Gastelum, who was number 9 at middleweight and I didn't get a chance. If you look at the top 10, I'm coming off a knockout against an opponent who was on a winning streak (Derek Brunson). If I was just a fan, I would say the next one would have to be Cannonier,” she concluded.

With an eye on an unprecedented title fight, Cannonier has had five wins in his last six appearances. In his career, there are 15 triumphs – over names like Anderson Silva, Derek Brunson, Jack hermansson –, in addition to five setbacks.
