After retiring in October 2020, Khabib Nurmagomedov saw the rise of Charles of the Bronx towards the vacant title of the lightweight division (up to 70,3kg.). And, after betting on the victory of Dustin poirier, he had 'real proof' that the Brazilian was here to stay when he submitted the North American in the third round with a rear naked choke in the UFC 269 last Saturday (11).

However, in an interview with 'ESPN', Khabib 'went back' on his opinion about Do Bronx and admitted that he was impressed with the champion's performance over the American. The Russian now asks for a confrontation between the Brazilian and Islam makhachev for 2022.
“Now is the time for Charles Oliveira (From the Bronx). He impressed me, and I truly believe he is one of the best fighters in the world right now and the best lightweight in the world. It will be very interesting if, in the next fight, Islam wins and Charles wins, and they will fight at the end of next year. It’s going to be a great fight,” said Khabib.
Khabib, in fact, compares the situation to Charles of the Bronx e Islam makhachev with the scenario experienced by the Russian with Tony Ferguson in the past, in which both athletes were on a good streak.
“(Makhachev x Do Bronx) is going to be a bit like 'Tony Ferguson x Khabib Nurmagomedov', he knows? Right now, (Charles) has a ten-fight winning streak. If Islam wins the next fight, he will also have the same sequence. It will be great. Great fight for both of them and for the UFC, for sure. I really (hope) that they both win and fight at the end of next year”, he concluded.
While Charles of the Bronx rests after defending his lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg.) for the first time, Islam makhachev has a fight scheduled for February 26th, when he faces Beneil Dariush in the main fight of the night.
