The dispute over who is the best boxer in mixed martial arts is a common topic in discussions involving the sport. Former fighter and now commentator, Daniel Cormier gave his opinion on the 'controversy'. Instead of choosing a star from the current UFC roster, DC dared and chose an athlete who only competed in one MMA fight.

“Firstly, the best boxer in the history of mixed martial arts and the best to step into the Octagon is James Toney. He may not have been able to show his skill, but he is the best. Even though he was submitted by Randy (Couture), James Toney is the world middleweight champion (in the 'noble art'),” said Cormier, in his account on Instagram.

Willing to value your opinion, Daniel made a point of explaining his point of view. The commentator highlighted high points in Toney's career as a boxer.

“James fought Bernard Hopkins. He is one of the best boxers of all time. If we're going to give Conor (McGregor) credit for taking on Floyd (Mayweather) in a boxing match against one of the best, then how can they ignore James Toney, who has had an entire career being one of the best we've ever seen?” closed.

Named as 'the best boxing within MMA' by Cormier, James worked in professional boxing between 1988 and 2017. In the sport, the athlete won world titles and ended his career with 77 victories in 87 contests.

Toney's test in Ultimate took place in 2010. On that occasion, the athlete faced the legendary Randy Couture. In the confrontation, the boxer was submitted in the first round. The meeting with the former UFC champion marked the boxer's first and last challenge in mixed martial arts.
