Former challenger for the Ultimate welterweight (up to 77kg) belt, Gilbert Durinho has been talked about as a future opponent of Khamzat Shimaev. Brazilian highlight in the category led by Kamaru Usman, the Niteroi native sees the eventual fight with good eyes and made a point of explaining the reason.

“I think I will face him very soon. I think he needs another victory and I believe he will get it. If things go the way they are, like Colby (Covington) even saying my name, (Jorge) Masvidal, Leon (Edwards). Why not? I'm going to give him an opportunity”, said Durinho, in an interview with 'MMA Junkie'.

Keeping an eye on the athlete who was once called a 'phenomenon' by Dana White himself, Durinho spoke about Chimaev's trajectory with the Ultimate gloves. To date, the young man has four triumphs in the company, practically untouched and beating all rivals in the fast lane.

“Sometimes, people don’t understand who schedules the fights. There are times when they feed you. They want new challengers, new stars and they give you some guys. There are times when they don't destroy the guys the way I would like, but he (Chimaev) is doing a great job and I think he's the real deal”, he concluded.

Last week, the names of Durinho and Khamzat were on the rise within the UFC universe. The athletes offered to replace Jorge masvidal in the fight against Leon edwards No. UFC 269. Ignored by the Englishman, the Swede changed his stance and suggested to the Brazilian that they both face each other on the show.

The request was promptly accepted by the Niteroi native. Ultimate, however, did not take a position on the possibility.
