Most federal universities in Brazil have in their acronym the two-letter code that identifies the state of origin. This is how UFRJ, UFBA and UFMG, among others, are known. An exception is the Federal University of Ceará. However, the entity's rector wants to change the acronym. The reasons are simple: adapting to national standards and an end to the confusion with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Rector Jesualdo Farias' idea is to change the identification of his university to UFCE. “We are losing to the UFC and our UFC can change to UFCE, thus adopting the acronym of our state completely,” Farias told Estadão.
The proposal will be forwarded for deliberation to the UFC University Council, a university founded on December 16, 1954, 39 years before Rorion Gracie created Ultimate. But the dean knows that it will not be easy to convince him of the change. “It is a process that needs to be debated with the entire academic community and we have already started work in this direction. And we are already working on the legal side to resolve this.”
