After much speculation, the Cuban Hector Lombard made the decision to downgrade official. The former Bellator middleweight champion will compete in his next UFC fight as a welterweight.
To reach his goal of reaching the 77-pound weight limit, Lombard said he has been working to lower his natural weight. The fighter said he weighs 87 kilos – before he weighed 100 kilos outside of fights. In addition to a strict diet, the Cuban has been running around 20 kilometers a day to help with his weight loss task.
At 35 years old, Lombard stated that he never felt the need to move down a category, but felt that was the intention of the UFC bosses. For his debut in the new category, he is already thinking about an opponent: Nate Marquardt, who has already gone through the process of moving down from midfielder to welterweight. Asked if he would like to face Lombard, Marquardt declared: “Sure, why not?”, giving the cue to the matchmakers of the UFC.
Lombard arrived in the UFC boasting an incredible 25-fight unbeaten streak. In the octagon, he debuted after being defeated by Tim Boetsch, recovering by knocking him out Rousimar Toquinho, but once again felt the bitter taste of defeat against Yushin Okami.
