Borrachinha arrived at Ultimate in 2017, as the event's middleweight champion.Jungle Fight'. The Brazilian fighter arrived at the largest MMA organization in the world with an undefeated record of eight victories, seven of which were by knockout. The athlete from Minas Gerais had participated in the third edition of 'The Ultimate Fighter Brasil' in 2014, but lost to Márcio Lyoto in his first fight in the house and was eliminated.
Ultimate debut
In March 2017, at UFC Fortaleza, Borrachinha debuted in the biggest organization in the world against South African Garreth McLellan. Faced with the support of a packed arena, the Brazilian needed just over a minute to knock out his opponent and drive the Ceará public crazy. From then on, Paulo showed the world as a born knockout artist.
Less than three months later, in June of the same year, the Brazilian returned to the Octagon to face off against Nigerian Oluwale Bamgboose. The second fight ended with a scenario similar to Borrachinha's debut: another quiet victory by knockout, but this time, in the second round.
First serious opponent
Already accompanied by 'hype' after two knockouts in two fights, Borrachinha was called up for his first fight outside Brazil for Ultimate and already on a big stage and against a strong opponent. In November, at UFC 217 which took place at the historic Madison Square Garden in New York (USA), the Brazilian would face former welterweight champion (under 77,1kg) Jhony Hendricks. Far from the form that led him to win the belt, the American was also defeated by the fast track. It was 'Big Rig's last fight with the organization's gloves.
With three knockouts in just one year, Paulo was one of the greatest fightershyping' from Ultimate. After a brief rest break, the Brazilian returned to the octagon in July 2018 to face the Jamaican Uriah Hall. In a fight surrounded by controversies and provocations, Borrachinha ran over the 'Ambulance Man' and managed another knockout in the second round.
THE BIG CHALLENGE
In August 2019, Borrachinha was facing the biggest challenge of his professional career. At UFC 241, the Brazilian faced off against the veteran and former challenger Yoel romero. After a 15-minute 'war', the Brazilian had his first (and only so far) victory by unanimous decision from the judges. The triumph stamped the Tupiniquim athlete's passport for the middleweight belt dispute against Israel adesanya.
At 30 years old, Borrachinha comes from more than 13 months of inactivity for the duel against Vettori. His last fight was in the defeat to Israel adesanya, in September 2020. The fighter has an MMA record of 13 triumphs and only one setback.
