One of the tragedy caused by the death of Justin Thornton, the consequence of the worsening of a knockout suffered at Bare Kunckle FC, moved the martial arts community this week. After confirming the death of the veteran, defeated by Dilon Cleckler in August, the Association of Boxing Commissions of the United States (ABC) spoke out about the situation, which could put 'bare-knuckle boxing' events at risk.

In an excerpt published by 'Combate', the entity makes public its concern about athletes who undergo such confrontations, which expose fighters to a high level of aggression. The statement was released last Tuesday (5), about a day after the announcement of Justin's death.

“The committee is especially concerned that athletes competing in bare-knuckle boxing are at increased risk of acute and chronic injuries due to these and other factors,” they posted.

Also according to 'Combate', the Association of Boxing Commissions admitted to paying special attention to 'bare-knuckle boxing' events. As it is a combat sport that, on many occasions, is shocking with bloody images, as well as brutal knockouts, some rules should be followed to maintain, as much as possible, the physical integrity of its employees. However, the suggestions are not properly followed.

“Despite our recommendations, some jurisdictions that regulate these events still do not follow the minimum medical guidelines determined by the ABC and the Association of Ring Doctors (ARP). More worrying is the fact that many commissions still do not require any imaging studies (whether computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) in a sport where individuals are at risk of chronic and acute head injuries,” they admitted.

Victim of possible negligence on the part of BKFC, as suggested by ABC, Thornton was making his debut for the organization in the clash against Clecker. The 38-year-old veteran didn't have much face time. The athlete went to the canvas just 19 seconds into the fight and, after the brutal outcome, he was immediately hospitalized and continued until the day of his death.

PUBLICITY:

The cause of death was an infection caused by a spinal cord injury. Before arriving at BKFC, Justin had a long career in MMA. The athlete, however, had a negative record, with 18 defeats and six wins in 24 commitments.
