Betting on experience, Anderson preaches respect to Weidman: “He won some fights”

Spider bets on 30 years of experience in martial arts to win

On the eve of completing one year since his last title defense, Anderson Silva will face Chris Weidman in the main fight of UFC 162, on July 6, in Las Vegas. The middleweight champion is the favorite at the bookmakers, but that doesn't mean Spider will underestimate the challenger.

“We have to respect Weidman,” Anderson told MMAjunkie. “He won some fights and proved he can be where he is. He's ten years younger than me and will come with great cardio and great strength to try grappling, I'm sure of that. We have to respect it. He won some fights.”

Several people believe that Weidman, a more athletic and versatile version of Chael Sonnen, could represent the biggest danger of Anderson's UFC career. The fact that Sonnen won five of the seven rounds fought against Anderson boosts the chances of Weidman, younger than the loudmouth. But the age difference doesn't seem to worry the Brazilian:

“Saying he’s a younger guy doesn’t make a lot of sense. I'm always training with younger guys. I train with a world jiu-jitsu champion who is 20 years old. I train with a kickboxing champion who is also much younger than me. I’m always training with younger, very athletic guys, so it doesn’t really make a difference.”

To combat his opponent's youth, Anderson relies on experience. “You can't argue with talent, each person has their own talents. But I've been doing this since I was eight years old and the new generation needs to see what I've done and where I've been. I'm not someone who started training in my teens or 20s. I've been doing it for a long time, so it's become second nature and something I feel comfortable doing. It’s something I’ve always done,” he said.

“A fight is a fight. My experience will tell when I'm inside. I've been doing this since I was eight years old, I think it has a lot to do with when you're in the cage“, he concluded.

Almost a month into the fight, Silva is feeling the weight and obligation of overcoming the best MMA fighter today. This is because Silba has always chosen his opponents and now finds himself facing Cyclone Weidman, who is about to become the new middleweight champion.
Weidman is not talking about the fight against Silba but rather the rematch he will give Silva and this, of course, terrifies Silva and his team, after all, no opponent so far has taken such boldness upon himself.
