“At the beginning of next year, Gegard (Mousasi) will be busy facing Austin (Vanderford). If there is an opening and he (Romero) wants to go down, facing the winner of that fight, we would love that too. We have a lot of exciting options for Romero and I’m excited to get them off the ground,” said the president, at a press conference after last weekend’s show.

Hired by Bellator in December 2020, Yoel was supposed to make his debut against another former Ultimate representative. Initially, the chosen one was Anthony Johnson, but a failed medical exam forced the veteran to leave the fight and, consequently, the light heavyweight tournament (up to 93kg.) of which he would be one of the stars.

With the situation regularized, Romero was selected to face Phil Davis. The confrontation, which headlined the Bellator 266, ended up leaving something to be desired. After three rounds, the Cuban was defeated by a split decision from the judges.

If he accepts the challenge of returning to middleweight for a title fight, the 44-year-old veteran may have to wait. The confrontation between Mousasi and Vanderfod, although verbally agreed, still has no official date.
