The career of one of the biggest names in the UFC welterweight category seems to have come to an end. Former champion Matt Serra, one of two men on the planet who can count on a victory over Georges St Pierre in his cartel, he confirmed that returning to fight is no longer part of his plans. Serra, however, revealed that he would return to the octagon to fight at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

"It is hard to say. It's like you can't talk, but it's probably true (that I'm retired). I would like to end my career with one last fight at Madison Square Garden, but at the same time, if that doesn't happen, I would definitely consider it over. It's hard to say the 'a' word (retirement). I couldn’t say the ‘a’ word,” Serra said.

Matthew John Serra, now 38 years old, is the protagonist of one of the biggest upsets in the history of Ultimate. In April 2007, after winning TUF 4, the American won the right to fight for the welterweight belt against Georges St Pierre and ended up knocking out the Canadian in the first round. The title, however, ended up returning to GSP in the next meeting between the two, in 2008.

Over the more than eleven years he was active, Matt Serra won eleven fights and lost seven. In his last appearance in the octagon, Renzo Gracie's black belt ended up defeated by Chris Lytle, at UFC 119, in September 2011.
