“My weight cut was very tough, but it always is. The problem is that, in Abu Dhabi (where 'Fight Island' is located), the fights take place in the morning, not at night. So, you have one more night (to recover). What happened is that, after the weight cut, I recovered very well, but then I trained very hard. I was so confident that I trained more than recommended. I think it was really bad for my body. I had a lot of cramps and trouble sleeping,” said Borrachinha.

As the night went on, Paulo continued to have difficulty falling asleep. From then on, tension began to take over the athlete, who would perform hours later. That's how, according to the Brazilian, he chose to drink wine.

“I would never let this fight go down. After the physical therapist came to my room, I went to bed and couldn't sleep. I tried melatonin, but it didn't work. Every now and then, I drink a glass of wine when I feel really stressed. It helps me a little, but only one glass, when I have time to get it out of my system, but it was too late. I was desperate to fall asleep”, concluded the miner.

In the fight against Adesanya, Borrachinha ended up not performing as expected and the athlete ended up being knocked out in the second round. With the setback, the Brazilian was unable to win the title and suffered the first result in his professional MMA career.

Almost a year after the incident, Paulo is preparing to return to the octagon. On October 23, the number two in the middleweight rankings has a confirmed commitment against Marvin vettori. A victory over the Italian could bring the Minas Gerais native closer to a fight for the title, which he continues with Adesanya.
