Challenged by Makhachev, Michael Chandler praises Russian, but says: 'Wrestling surpasses sambo'

With an eye on a dominant victory for Islam makhachev about Thiago Moses No. UFC Las Vegas 31, Michael chandler welcomed the challenge made by the Russian after the weekend's event. “He (Makhachev) did what he needed to do, which was go out there and put a stamp on his performance. Now, he is also doing his job. He is stuck in ninth (in the rankings), he wants to challenge as many names as he can”, said Chandler in a conversation with the press after the event.

Defeated by Charles of the Bronx in the fight for the then vacant lightweight title (up to 70,3kg), in May, Michael made a point of not belittling the qualities of Islam, who expanded the good moment in his career. However, the North American believes he would emerge victorious in the 'clash of styles' against the Russian and explained why.

“The guy was impressive. I take my fighting hat off to him. He did a phenomenal job, very hard. He has a bright future, let’s see what happens,” said Michael, before filling in why he believes he can surpass Makhachev. “I'm 'from home' when it comes to wrestling. I believe that the sport can defeat anything. He wins judo, jiu-jitsu, sambo (Islam specialty). What Makhachev does is take you to the position where you can't move. (…) Thiago Moses has grapple phenomenal, (…) he couldn’t use it. What Makhachev does best is neutralize his opponents. When he does this, it's not just physical. It's psychological, emotional, cardio. He sucks the life out of opponents,” he concluded.

With a new dominant performance, Makhachev didn't just challenge Chandler after his victory over Thiago. The Russian also proposed a confrontation against Tony Ferguson, who is going through a difficult time in his career.

After the triumph, one of Islam's main coaches, Khabib, stated that he would like to see his pupil in action one more time this season. The expectation is that the promise of the division will return to action in 2021.
