the fight between Nick Diaz e Robbie Lawler marks a rematch of a duel from 17 years ago. The two faced each other at UFC 47, in April 2004, with a memorable victory for Diaz by knockout in the second round.

the last appearance of Nick Diaz in the Octagon was in January 2015, when he faced Anderson Silva at UFC 183. The fight ended without result after both fighters were caught in anti-doping tests – the Brazilian for metabolites of drostanolone and androsterone, and the North American for marijuana. Diaz's last victory came in October 2011, when he defeated BJ Penn.
