The confrontation between Conor and Dustin marked the end of the trilogy between the athletes, which began in 2014. With the victory, Poirier achieved his second victory over the 'Notório' of the season and prevented Conor's dream of returning to compete for the lightweight title ( up to 70,3kg.).

Beaten again by the American, McGregor continues without winning in the category in more than five years. It is still too early to know the severity of the Irishman's injury. The fighter may be away from the sport for an indefinite period of time until he fully recovers.

Now, victorious, Poirier may have stamped his passport to fight again for the division's linear belt. With the new knockout, the North American could become the first challenger to the reign of Charles of the Bronx.

In the interview after the tragic incident, McGregor assured that the story between them was not over. Provoking Poirier, the Irishman, at first, ruled out leaving MMA.

The fight

In the opening seconds, McGregor launched a sequence of four kicks at Poirier. More aggressive, the Irishman continued walking forward and trying to intimidate his opponent. Dustin discounted the attacks in kind and forced Conor to change base. The confrontation remained tense, with the athletes exchanging blows in the center of the octagon. The 'Notório' released his famous left hand, but ended up surprised by a direct shot in response. McGregor made a swing and the American went for the legs. Conor took advantage of the American's oversight and threatened a guillotine. Poirier defended well and ended up on top, in an advantageous position over his opponent. From below, the Irishman threw elbows, but Poirier was not intimidated. The 'Diamond' started to hit the Irishman, who received the attacks cleanly. In the final minute, the American continued looking for the knockout. Conor tried to resist, but had a hard time in the first stage. Towards the end, Conor managed to get up, but ended up suffering a serious ankle injury after risking a direct shot at his opponent. The incident happened in the final seconds and, realizing the condition of the 'Notorious', the confrontation was interrupted.
