Appointed as favorite for the fight, Júlio Cesar Chávez Jr. was unable to confirm his status as former world champion and was surprised by Anderson Silva, who won by split decision after an eight-round duel. Previously, the Mexican had also failed to make weight for the clash.

At 35 years old, the Mexican has 60 boxing fights, with 52 victories, six defeats, one draw and one 'no result' fight. He won the WBC (World Boxing Council) belt by defeating Sebastian Zbik in June 2011 and managed to defend the title on three other occasions.
