Moreno celebrates historic feat by becoming the first Mexican champion in UFC history

New flyweight leader, athlete opens up about difficulties in reaching the top of MMA and claims to put the sport on another level

In addition to dethroning one of the biggest Brazilian names in recent Ultimate history, Brandon Moreno There is another important reason to celebrate. One of the protagonists of UFC 263, held this Saturday (12), the athlete marked an era by becoming the first athlete born in Mexico to reach the top of the organization. In a press conference after the show, the new flyweight champion (up to 56,7kg) spoke about the subject.

“That was one of my biggest goals. I have a lot of respect for guys like Cain Velazquez, Henry Cejudo (athletes born in the United States, but with Latin roots). They worked a lot in sport for my country. (…) He (Velasquez) took Mexican MMA to another level. I was born in Tijuana, grew up there, went to school there. I suffered with the opportunities, with the government’s shit. Big companies don't sponsor sports, especially martial arts”, said the athlete.

With his achievement, Moreno understands that he will be seen with different eyes by the population of his country. For the combatant, the title could change the scenario and the Mexican government's vision of treatment with the modality.

“I know that, with this belt, I take the sport to another level. It makes me feel incredible.”

To reach the top of the flyweight division, Moreno showed a different level than in his first fight with Deiveson, at the end of 2020. Although he gave the former champion trouble in the UFC 256, reaching the draw against Pará, this weekend, Brandon put on a real show. Ignoring the aggressive style of the 'God of War', the athlete took no notice of Figueiredo and scored the first submission suffered in the Tupiniquim's career.
