After winning the bantamweight belt (up to 61,2 kg.) by receiving an illegal knee from Petr yan, the american aljamain sterling became the target of criticism by people involved in MMA, who accused him of staging. “Just get off the internet, bro. You don't need to explain, it's not helping. Let's talk, that's what we do. You have to let it go! Enjoy your time, recover, spend time with your family and just relax. You can't fight every battle”, wrote 'DC' on his social media.
Even though it hasn't been made official, the rematch between Sterling and Yan seems close to happening. In an interview with 'MMA fighting', the North American even agrees with the duel and wants to 'fix things' to defeat the Russian.
“Do I feel like a champion? No. I feel like I was unfairly attacked in a fight against the rules. Is this considered or worthy enough to be considered a disqualification? I think so. (…), but the fight was competitive. I was losing in the fourth round. I received the belt due to disqualification and that's not good for me. That doesn't make me feel like a world champion. That belt will sit there gathering dust until the day we actually fight and make things right. So from there, we’ll see who really should be the No. 1 guy in this division,” Sterling said.
Played on the main card of UFC 259, the fight between Petr yan e aljamain sterling heading into the fifth round. However, the Russian ended up delivering a strong knee to the American's head, who was kneeling on the ground. After a few minutes of recovery, Sterling did not return to the fight and received – after his opponent was disqualified – the division title.
