If the situation is confirmed, this will be the second time that Masvidal will have the opportunity to win a linear belt in Ultimate. In July 2020, the North American agreed to face the champion with less than a week to go before the clash. On that occasion, Jorge replaced Gilbert Durinho, who left the UFC 251 after testing positive for Covid-19.

When he faced Kamaru for the first time, Masvidal ended up being an easy prey to the champion's strategy. In the confrontation, the North American was the victim of grappling and produced little during five rounds, losing in a unanimous decision by the judges.

After defeating Gilbert Durinho, UFC 258, Usman made public his desire to give Masvidal a rematch. The champion's argument to justify the appeal would be that he would be able to beat Jorge without needing the match to go down to points.
