Derrick Lewis doesn't say he's surprised by the knockout over Curtis Blaydes: 'I just had to be patient'

The North American stated that he was aware of his opponent's takedown attempts and knew how to remain calm until victory

Even though he 'broke the bank' in betting and analysis houses before the fight took place, the heavyweight (up to 120,2kg.) Derrick Lewis revealed that he was prepared to fight against Curtis blaydes. According to the athlete, the result of the main attraction of the UFC Las Vegas 19 this Saturday (20) was the result of all the work in training.

“I was just waiting for him to try to take me down and nothing more. We (Lewis and coaches) knew this would happen. This is what we have been training for all month. Twelve weeks, in fact. Trying to prepare for that guy (Blaydes)”, said Lewis, in a post-event press conference.

Asked about the difficulties in the first round, Derrick stated that, even though he was at a disadvantage, he knew that the result would be reversed and he really felt the evolution throughout the fight.

“At the end of the first round, I got the impression that he was giving it his all. That's what I was thinking. When the round ended, his coach was trying to lift his head: 'Good, you're doing well.' So I knew I was going to try to defend the takedowns he was going to try. I just had to be patient”, concluded the fighter.

At 36, Derrick Lewis should take second place – which currently belongs to Curtis blaydes – and get closer to a title fight. He currently has 25 wins, seven losses and one unsuccessful fight in his career.
