Famous for his acidic statements, Chael Sonnen did not spare Charles of the Bronx of his criticisms when analyzing the Brazilian's stance in the current lightweight scenario (up to 70,3kg.). Former fighter and current commentator, the veteran stated that the Brazilian has acted incorrectly when trying to promote himself towards a title fight. The 'American Gangster' spoke about the subject on his channel YouTube.

“Charles (Do Bronx) Oliveira recently said, 'Let me face (Dustin) Poirier. I'm the guy who's going to bring Khabib (Nurmagomedov) back.' First, if you're in a division, why do you care if someone comes back to your division? Second, why would anyone give you this opportunity if you're the guy who's going to bring Khabib back? I’m picking on (Charles) Oliveira here, but he’s a talented guy, but he’s doing everything wrong,” said the North American, in an excerpt translated by ‘ge’.

Willing to face 'Diamante', who recently ran over Conor McGregor, UFC 257, Do Bronx remains firm in his decision that he will only return to the octagon for a title fight. For Sonnen, however, focusing only on 'Diamante' is a mistake, as the former interim champion has already made public his desire to carry out the trilogy against 'Notório'. Oliveira is now asking for a fight against Poirier. He leaves saying: 'Poirier knows I'm not kidding. He knows I'm going to beat him and that I'm the real champion'. All of these things make for great fight promos. Saying, 'I'm going to kick your ass, you're scared of me, I'm going to take everything you work for' is effective, but only when you already have a signed contract, you dumbass,” Chael fired.

Finally, the 'American Gangster' admitted that, in his opinion, it is unlikely that the São Paulo native will receive a chance to fight for the belt in his next commitment. The veteran then justified his thinking.

“Oliveira could walk into a kitchen full of MMA fans, slap one of them and no one would be able to tell the cops who he is. It's just a cold, hard reality, but no one knows who he is. So if he gets a title fight, it will be a miracle,” he concluded.

Although it was directly cited by Sonnen about the current context of the category, recently, Do Bronx admitted that he would accept to face another opponent, other than Poirier. The Brazilian, however, demands that the confrontation be valid for the group title.

Coming from eight consecutive victories, Charles now occupies third place in the category led by Khabib Nurmagomedov (retired since October 2020). In his last fight, the São Paulo native won Tony Ferguson in a dominant way and was placed in the top 5 of the division.
