Absolute flyweight champion since July, Figueiredo wants to continue his reign against Alex Perez, called into the confrontation to replace cody garbrandt, who, in October, left the event due to injury.
Willing to make history in MMA, Jennifer will have the tough role of silencing many critics, who point to the champion as a big favorite. The Brazilian is making her first title fight in the UFC.
Close to retirement, the weekend will also bring the legendary Mauritius Shogun in the octagon. Without losing since July 2018, the former UFC light heavyweight (up to 93kg) champion will repeat the confrontation with Paul Craig, which ended in a draw, in November last year, for UFC Sao Paulo.
No card preliminar, o verde-amarelo será representado pela promissora Ariane Lipski. Representante do peso mosca, a tupiniquim enfrentará Antonina Shevchenko, Valentina's sister, and will try to confirm the good phase in the organization.
To get in the mood, our team selected five reasons to follow the UFC 255. Check out:
1) The reign of Deiveson Figueiredo
Ultimate Champion after brutal defeat Joseph Benavidez Twice, Deiveson became the only Brazilian man to currently hold a UFC belt. Known for his aggressiveness and versatility with which he conducts his clashes, the 'God of War' wants to prove that he will have a long reign in the category.
Recently, the man from Pará was highly praised by Daniel Cormier, which bet on a very successful trajectory for the Brazilian as leader of the division. To make DC's speech count, Figueiredo must go through Alex Perez, who, in October, accepted the challenge of replacing cody garbrandt, who was injured and was forced to leave his post.
In addition to defending his title, Deiveson is looking to extend his undefeated streak to five fights. The Brazilian has only one defeat in his career in 20 engagements. The setback happened in March last year, when he was beaten on points by his compatriot Jussier formiga.
2) Alex Perez: a real danger
Although he is not a big-name opponent – just like Benavidez was –, Perez wants to show his service and show that the UFC made no mistake in choosing him to replace Garbrandt. Current number four in the category ranking, the North American is coming off a great victory over Formiga, the only man in history to have beaten Deiveson.
In Ultimate since December 2017, Alex arrived at the organization after his participation in 'Dana White's Contender Series'. Known both for his knockout power and his qualities on the ground, Perez will try to surprise Deivesono in the main fight of the night.
In seven engagements with the company's gloves, Alex was defeated only once, in the match against Figueiredo's last victim, Joseph Benavidez. Today, Perez boasts an undefeated streak of three positive results.
3) Valentina: the super champion
Flyweight queen since December 2018, Valentina Shevchenko has been raising doubts among fans about whether there is any woman in the group who can surpass her. This weekend, the Kyrgyzstani will put her belt on the line for the fourth time and, to stay on top, she must assert her favoritism against Jennifer maia.
In his three title defenses to date, three more than dominant victories. Against Jessica Eye, in 2019, an overwhelming knockout with a kick to the head, which obliterated her opponent. Two months later, the victim was veteran Liz Carmouche, who lost in the judges' decision. In 2020, at UFC 247, Valentina once again shined against Katlyn chookagian. In the new challenge, a new knockout.
Known as one of the best fighters in recent MMA history, Shevchenko, however, must do her best to not be surprised by a Jennifer maia hungry.
4) Jennifer Maia and the Brazilian zebra
Anyone who has been following MMA for a long time knows that surprises happen in the sport. Sports fans have seen great champions like Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva succumb to opponents who were considered minorities in the betting houses.
This Saturday, Jennifer will have the opportunity to join the group of fighters who silenced the critics and 'broke the stands'. In true 'Holly x Ronda' style, the Brazilian will try to shock the world and surprise one of the best in the world.
Against Valentina, the Curitiba native will have the chance to make history and win the highest place in the division. To do this, the athlete has to remain calm and leave the pressure aside, so that she can put her strategy into practice.
Today, Maia is the Brazilian who is the least favorite Brazilian fighter in history to fight for a title. In betting shops, the Curitiba woman 'pays' 10 to 1.
5) Maurício Shogun: the last race
One of the people most responsible for spreading MMA around the world, Mauritius Shogun He is getting closer to the end of his career every day. Legend of the extinct Pride and former UFC light heavyweight champion, the 38-year-old Brazilian wants to do well in his remaining fights, before leaving the sport permanently.
After winning Rogério Minotouro, in August, and ending a historical trilogy between them, Shogun has a new reckoning against another acquaintance. At the UFC 255, the Curitiba native will face Paul Craig and will repeat a duel held in November last year, when the fighters drew in the event held in São Paulo.
While Shogun seeks to end his career on a high note, Craig wants to have a victory over one of the biggest names in Brazilian MMA of all time. Currently, Maurício occupies the 14th position in the ranking led by Jan Blachowicz. Paul is 15th.
