Daniel Cormier confirms he contracted Covid-19 while preparing for his fight against Stipe Miocic

Former fighter claims he was affected by the disease, but does not take credit from the champion for winning the fight

Now a former fighter, Daniel Cormier revealed that he had contracted Covid-19 during his preparation for the clash against Stipe Miocic No. UFC 252, held last month. In an interview with 'Yahoo Sports', the North American confirmed the information, but did not take away the merits of the champion, who retained the title at the end of the trilogy.

“This is not an excuse at all. Miocic won the fight and fought beautifully. This is a thank you to Oura (Health) – a device made available by the UFC that monitors athletes' health -, which allowed me to be in the fight. I was able to take proper care of myself, return to training and compete for the heavyweight belt (up to 120,2 kg). Without the ring, it wouldn’t be possible,” declared DC.

With the fight taking place on August 15th, the information was released to the public just a month after the card. In the confrontation, Cormier climbed into the Octagon to try to regain his position as champion, which he had lost last year.

According to the former champion, his symptoms appeared days after a training partner at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) was diagnosed with Covid-19.

O UFC 252 It marked the third meeting between Daniel and Stipe, who began their rivalry in 2018, when DC moved up from light heavyweight (up to 93kg) and shocked the world by managing to beat the then champion.

After the new defeat, Cormier announced his retirement from MMA, at the age of 41. In the interview after the fight, the American stated that there is no point in continuing his career if there is no title at stake. The athlete now pursues his career as one of the UFC's main commentators.
