However, the Brazilian, with an established career, was surprised by an invitation from Mike Tyson to train him in his return to boxing, against Roy Jones Jr on November 28th. To the North American website MMA Junkie, Rafael talked about the unique experience, made no secret of being a fan of 'Iron Mike' and revealed that he learned more than he taught.
“My heart was like 'my Lord!'. When I held hands Mike Tyson, I didn't know what to expect for several reasons. I was there and then he said 'let's get started'. I prepared his hands and it was great to see the technique in its pure state. Everything we saw on television, I had the opportunity to see in front of me. It was great to see one of the best of all time showing his skills in front of me. I learned a lot. We worked together for five months and I can say that the entire time I was with Tyson, I learned more than I taught,” said Rafael.
The Brazilian was grateful for the opportunity and tried to define the boxing legend.
“Tyson is the story of the fight. When he talks about struggles, he speaks from the heart. He lives for fights,” he concluded.
At 54, Mike Tyson surprised the fighting world by announcing his return to boxing and even more by showing that, despite his advanced age, he remains fast and powerful. The former heavyweight champion's last fight was held in 2005. In turn, Rafael Cordeiro, former member of the traditional Chute Boxe gym and current leader of Kings MMA, competed three times for the MMA Oscar as best trainer and won the award on two occasions (2012 and 2016).
