In the confrontation that confirmed Miocic as the great heavyweight champion (up to 120,2 kg), the referee admitted his mistake in not stopping the confrontation when DC accused that he had been hit by an illegal finger and confirmed that he had apologized to the North American after the duel.

Even without questioning the final result of the fight, Cormier left the octagon claiming he couldn't see out of his left eye. The former champion, however, recognized Miocic as champion and, at the age of 41, sealed his retirement before even leaving the UFC Apex.
