Before the family tragedy with his father and martial arts mentor, Khabib was negotiating to fight the long-awaited fight against Justin gaethje, for the unification of the lightweight belt. The confrontation was speculated to take place on September 19, at UFC 253. However, after Abdulmanap's death, the agreement did not materialize.

In a recent interview, Dana White, president of Ultimate, stated that he will not pressure the linear champion to return to the octagon. The 'boss' understands the difficult moment the Russian is going through and will wait until the 'Eagle' is ready for the next step.
