The Brazilian Edson Barboza is close to confirming his next commitment to Ultimate. The athlete has a verbal agreement to face Dan Ige and will make his debut at featherweight (up to 65,7kg) on May 16, in Jacksonville, Florida (USA). The information was released by 'Combate'.

The Brazilian, who was once considered one of the most dangerous athletes among the lightweights (up to 70,3kg), is now experiencing an unusual situation in his career. Coming from two consecutive defeats, Edson needs to win to eliminate any possibility of dismissal from the organization.
Even in a bad phase, Barboza, today, still occupies 11th position in his old category. However, setbacks for Justin gaethje e Paul felder (both in 2019) not only removed the fighter from a title fight, but also influenced the fighter's decision to test himself in the lower group.
He is mistaken, however, that the Friburgo native will have an easy time in his debut in the category dominated by Alexander Volkanovsky. For his first commitment in the new division, the UFC management decided to select the Brazilian against an athlete who has won five consecutive matches and has only lost once since signing his contract with the company.
With six Ultimate fights, the Hawaiian Dan Ige he will face a big name and is hoping for a triumph over Edson to continue his journey towards the top of the category.
If he beats Ige, Barboza could immediately occupy 15th place in the lightweight rankings – a place currently occupied by the Hawaiian.
