Sonnen accepts defeat and rules out appeal against Anderson

Anderson knees Sonnen

Scott McQuarry, technician Chael Sonnen, stated earlier this week that he would file an appeal with the Nevada Athletic Commission, the entity that sanctioned the fight, to nullify the victory de Anderson Silva on his pupil, due to the knee applied by the Brazilian, which according to the coach was illegal. But, it seems, Sonnen is against McQuarry's attitude and should not appeal the defeat.

“Yves Lavigne is a great judge. If he made that decision there are no excuses,” said Sonnen, in an interview with the North American website MMA Fighting. “The referee’s decision and that is the type of decision that we should not appeal. I can only respond with knees when fighting. Part of competing is that you have to know how to lose. It's really easy to win, but you have to know how to lose”, added the fighter.

Understand the rule
According to the unified rules of MMA, a fighter cannot land knees or kicks to the face of an opponent who is sitting, lying down or has at least three supports on the ground.

At the time Anderson threw the blow, Sonnen was sitting down, making it impossible for him to be hit in the face. The blow hit Chael squarely in the chest, but part of the Brazilian's thigh hit the American's face, which could be considered illegal. But referee Yves Lavigne considered the blow legal and let the fight continue, and soon after Anderson ended the fight with a series of punches on the ground.
